HK BN(O) Visa allows you and your family members to live,
work and study in the UK. But you cannot get social welfare in the UK.
After staying in the UK for 5 years, BNO holders can apply to live in the UK permanently (also known as Indefinite Leave to Remain).
When getting the status of Indefinite Leave to Retain for 12 months, you can apply for the British citizenship.

Eligibility Requirements

  • You own a BNO visa – You do not need to have a valid BNO passport. If the passport is lost or expired, you are not asked to apply for a new one
  • You always live in Hong Kong
  • You are able to support yourself financially for at least 6 months
  • You promise to learn English
  • You receive the tuberculosis test certificate from a clinic approved by the Home Office
  • You need to pay for the immigration fee and Immigration Health Surcharge

  • Spouse (Including unmarried spouse, same-sex partner)
  • Children (Including children aged above 18, who is bornt after 1st July 1997)

What is 5+1?


During the UK immigration, most of the BN(O) holders have to meet the requirements and stay in the UK for 5 years.

Criteria are listed below:

  • Before applying for Indefinite leave to remain, applicants are not allowed to leave the United Kingdom over 180 days in any 12 months
  • No public funds can be applied
  • Applicants should pass the IELTS Life Skill B1 Examination
  • Applicants have to pass Life in UK

Candidates can apply for the British citizenship after receiving the Indefinite leave to remain for 1 year. Criteria are listed below:

  • You should not leave the UK over 450 days in 5 years before application
  • You should not leave the UK over 90 days in 1 year before application

  • After receiving HK BN(O) Visa, it is necessary for you to arrive the UK within 90 days and get the Biometric Residence Permit.

    After receiving HK BN(O) Visa, it is necessary for you to arrive the UK before the visa is expired.
Is it possible for HK BN(O) holder and his/her elderly parents applying for visas together?
  • According to the information provided by the UK government, there is no possible ways for bringing elderly parents who do not have HK BN(O) to migrate into the UK.
After migrating into the UK, what should be done for children's school admission?
  • There are public schools and private schools in the UK. Public schools do not need to make reservations for admission. Instead, children are classified as transfer students. Besides, the United Kingdom adopts free education scheme so it is difficult for our clients to make applications in advance. Although private schools charge expensive fees, it provides greater flexibility. Applicants can make reservation in Hong Kong for the next academic year.
How much funds should be prepared? 
  • It depends on family members and ages, as well as living regions. Generally speaking, a family consists of 4 members needs a proof of £20,000. Please contact our consultant for more details.
How much would a family of three or four spend per month?
  • The information below are actual spending of our past clients:
    A family of three(not including rent): GBP 1,000-1,300
    A family of four(not including rent): GBP 1,300-1,500
    A family of five(not including rent): GBP 1,500-1,800
What rights and responsibilities do HK BN(O) holders have?
  • HK BN(O) holders can work, study and start their businesses freely in the UK. But they cannot enjoy social welfares unless they get the British citizenship.
Is it possible to use “Leave outside the rules” to stay in the UK and prepare for immigration in advance?
  • Leave outside the rules(LOTR) is a legal identity for staying in the UK for 6 months. The identity holder can study and work in the UK. Please be reminded that the LOTR should be extended before the expiry date. BNO Visa should be applied in order to make use of the “5+1” way for immigration.
Is there any possible effects for people who have criminal records to apply for visa?
  • The Home Office announced that applicants with criminal records would still be considered. We used to help clients with different criminal records apply UK visas.
If applicants only have poor English proficiency, is there any possible effects on application?
  • Hong Kong BN(O) visa applicants do not need to submit any English proficiency certificates.
    But they need to promise to learn English. When applying for permanent residency,
    applicants aged 18 or above have to submit the certificate of attaining IELTS Life Skill B1 or above.
    For applicants aged over 65, they are not required to submit the proof.
Are CUKC/BDTC holders eligible for the application?
  • If CUKC/BDTC holders cannot change the identity within the period, they are not able to fulfil the requirement of the BNO application.
